Caminito del Rey

The experience

We booked our tickets around three months ahead because of the high demand. From the Visitor Centre car park we took the bus and, before reaching the official entrance, chose the longer option: through the tunnel and along the woodland trail. That approach, surrounded by water, vegetation and viaducts, became one of the most enjoyable parts of the day.

At reception we were given helmets and a safety briefing before entering the walkways. The route is controlled, straightforward and popular with visitors; its appeal lies in travelling lengthwise through the gorge and seeing the mountain from within its walls, a very different perspective from a conventional trail.

The walkways link one cliff face to the next, opening constant views across the river and rock. Watching a train pass through the mountain added another layer to the scene, with the railway infrastructure set into a landscape of imposing scale.

The final bridge brought together the Caminito’s most recognisable view and closed the route with one last open perspective across the gorge. It was an accessible, safe experience, valuable precisely because it offered a different way to explore the mountains and was suitable for all audiences.
