Torcal de Antequera

The experience

I arrived early at the Visitor Centre car park and began in a much quieter area. The rocky terrain revealed fossils, herds, Spanish ibex poised on steep ground and a huge rock that appeared to balance in place. It was unlike any mountain landscape I had encountered before.

The track approached the area known as Cornisa del Diablo. I continued until the exposure increased and moving on alone, without suitable technical equipment, was no longer a reasonable decision. I retraced my steps and looked for an alternative higher up instead of trying to force a way through.

Once I regained the route from above, the landscape retained all its impact without needing to take such a high risk. Turning back took nothing away from the day; it simply established the right limit for the conditions and equipment I had with me.

Further on, I came across a stone shelter and several sinkholes, which I observed from outside. The route then entered the visitor area: more people, clearly defined paths and accessible circuits among the Torcal’s rounded, layered formations.

The contrast between the solitary first section and the better-known area gave the day a particularly varied character. Returning to the Visitor Centre completed a route shaped by geological curiosity, but also by recognising when it was time to turn back.
